Dungeons & Dragons for Groups

Have your friends delayed starting with the world’s most popular roleplaying game? Is your perma-DM exhausted from tirelessly cobbling together adventure after adventure, quest after quest? Or perhaps you’re celebrating a major event in your lives or career? Then I have the story for you!

What I offer:
I am currently offering to run D&D sessions digitally or in person (in Oslo) for groups of 3-6 players. For new players looking to learn D&D in a safe space with their friends, I can guide you through the character-creation process and provide a professional environment that gently eases you into the world of D&D. For veteran players, I offer you the chance to give your perma-DM a break and play together as a party in a custom-tailored adventure. These sessions will be story or theme-based narratives that can either take place over a single evening or over several sessions. They can be arranged as a connected micro-campaign or series of related (or unrelated) one-shots. Pricing will depend on the size of the group, the complexity of the adventure, and/or the familiarity of players with D&D.

Adventures can be written and tailored to your needs. For example, if your party likes hack-and-slash escapades with rapid looting and death lurking around every corner, I can do that! Alternatively, if your party enjoys political intrigue, detective work, or cultural exploration, then I can create or utilize adventures around these themes as well. Normally, I run balanced adventures that feature at least 1-2 combats per session, with a fair amount of exploration/investigation, and a goodly amount of NPC interaction to move the plot forwards. I can also adjust most off-the-shelf adventures or custom tailor an adventure of your choice based on your requirements. Sessions can be somber or playful, tense or contemplative, or a combination of multiple moods and tones.

Why pay to play?
Norway has a thriving D&D community and there are many great networks for joining groups both physically and online. However, some people will still have difficulty finding groups or coordinating meetups (especially with hectic workweeks and demanding family lives). Even once you actually have a group, there can be immature players and high drop-out rates. Sometimes even your DM is unprepared, or even cancels on short notice. It’s frustrating to go through these experiences time after time, especially when all you want to do is relax and have fun playing.

Here are some of the reasons why a professionally-run game can be a good alternative:

-The DM always arrives prepared and ready to play.
-The fee helps ensure that everyone is committed, with players more likely to prep beforehand to get the most from their session.
-By paying for sessions as a group, you know who you’re playing with and avoid some of the negative elements of PUG games that can happen during Adventurers League sessions or random games.
-The maturity level is usually higher in paid games. Players are more likely to avoid arguments and work through their differences quickly so that the adventure can continue.
-Charging a modest fee discourages player no-shows.
-Material costs associated with running a top-shelf game are covered. This includes access to DM Guild resources and the usage of all physical models, terrain, props, and handouts I prepare for each session. This also includes access to Roll20 and all the digital assets there, should the session be digital.
-Extra help for beginners at no charge. I’ll be available via chat early on to help guide all new players through the character creation process and help in creating a fun and relevant backstory.
-An immersive experience that includes background music, advanced role-play techniques, NPC/monster voices, and completely original stories hand-tailored to your specifications.

Some sample adventures:
Your forever DM is getting married and you want to give him/her a gift, consider running a one-shot on the perils and comedies of married life as you help track down an orc warchief fleeing their better half.

You’re near graduation and want to celebrate. Try running an encounter where you’re newly minted adventurers from Neverwinter Academy, and have been tasked with one final task: discovering the lost Tome of Academic Mastery from Candlekeep’s dusty (and dangerous) archives. Failure is not an option!

You’ve done nothing but political intrigue and espionage for the last eight months, and you’re sick of skulking in the shadows and pandering to every NPC you see. Instead, you want to lead your warband on a seige of the mighty floating castle of Terak’Nor or rampage through the Sunless Citadel megadungeon, hacking and bashing your way through room after room of nefarious villains all dripping with loot and magical goodies.

Rules at the table
I have strong rules against toxic behavior. No bullying, no sexual violence, no dominating the narrative, no rules-lawyers. Saying, “This is what my character would do,” is no excuse. Any disagreements with my DMing style or rulings at the table can (and should) be noted, however my job is to make sure that everyone at the table has the fair and equal possibility to enjoy their characters!

Jeremy Crawford, the primary rules-master for Wizard of the Coast, encourages people to play D&D with “Rules As Fun” (RAF), as opposed to over “Rules As Written” (RAW), in mind. While rules are important and give a common structure to sessions, they shouldn’t bog down the game or limit player actions. Players will have different knowledge sets, experiences, and backgrounds, and I want everyone to feel free to explore their roleplaying potential. Even as a professional GM, I don’t have a photographic memory of all the rules and errata, and will therefore play loose and fast with rulings where necessary. Prioritizing RAF over RAW also helps encourage creativity and keeps the pacing up. Disagreements and discussions on rulings can be taken up after sessions are completed.

My primary role at the table to is to ensure that every single player has a good time, and I take this role very seriously. Beginners are encouraged to join. I will always spend extra time easing new players into the game, discussing their class choices, and reviewing their backstories. For veteran players, I will strive to challenge your builds and make sure encounters, locales, and NPCs are unique and engaging.

Payment and access:
Upon payment, all players will receive access to DnDBeyond (and all the sourcebooks I have purchased there) so that they can build their characters and begin planning. If the session is digital, players will also gain access to Roll20, where they will find background information relating to their adventure. This information will be sent out via email or distributed on paper in physical sessions.

As noted above, pricing will depend on the size of the group, the complexity of the adventure, and/or the familiarity of players with D&D. Sessions can range anywhere from 2,000NOK for a quick off-the-shelf adventure with veteran players, to 20,000NOK for a series of sessions written and tailored by myself around a given theme. I can send either EHF or standard invoices. Consultation is free.

Bookings can be done via telephone or email.
